Business owners around the world are asking themselves the same question:
“What can we do to minimise this disruption to our business and our teams?”
While we may be wanting to wait for a directive to be in place, there are things you can do now to start reducing the impact that high fuel prices are having.
These don’t have to be overly complicated and as long as you can clearly outline and define any new changes, you should start seeing results straight away.
What works for one business may not work for another. Here are some options to consider:
Remote working – can it work for you?
One of the most effective ways that benefit the business owner and the employee is remote working. Obviously it doesn’t work for everyone. If it can, 2 or 3 days at home can make a huge difference. Look at alternating days, perhaps working half days in the office (an early finish to beat traffic). Document what your expectations are so everyone is clear.
Flexible start and finish times
Starting earlier or finishing earlier? Can you shift the usual business hours so people aren’t travelling to and from work in peak traffic hours? Perhaps this might work slightly differently from one business to another, such as not having the full team start at the same time. Stagger start and finish times or see what works for you.
Cost contributions
Remember, this won’t last forever and is for the short-term. Is there anything you can do to help your team with their commute costs? Perhaps helping toward parking costs if there are any, a temporary fuel or transport allowance, or a one-off support contribution. Check with your payroll provider or accountant on what can work best for you.
Our tips
- Communicate early and honestly. Everyone wants to be kept informed on what their employers are doing or even thinking about doing.
- Document everything. Even small initiatives you implement for the short-term. This is so everyone is aware of what is expected and for how long.
- Keep checking government guidance. Stay informed on what our country is doing and how it affects you.
Your approach will depend on the size and type of your business. These aren’t the only options available, but are the most practical and uncomplicated right now.
Employers that are having the conversations with their teams now are shown to help build trust which leads to higher retention and improved culture.
